Summer Seminar Brochure

Dear Cadets, Parent and Staff,

For any Cadets that are in 11th grade now, please consider applying to NASS (Naval Academy Summer Seminar) and the US Coast Guard AIM (Academy Information Mission) for this coming summer.  You will find out what these two academies are like.  The US Naval Academy, in Annapolis, Maryland and the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, are both excellent schools, and you get paid to attend them, you do not incur any monetary debt, while getting an excellent education.  It is worth applying to their summer programs, which are each one week long, so that you can find out if these Academies interest you.

Read all the information below carefully.  If you attend either of these summer programs, it is free, because Sea Cadets pays the cost.  It also counts as a Sea Cadet training.  So, give this some serious thought, and apply!

            Best regards,

            Lynn

 From NHQ--

NASS AND AIM FOR 2010

FOR THE ATTENTION OF ALL NSCC HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS …NAVAL ACADEMY SUMMER SEMINAR….NASS….SUMMER 2010 APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED STARTING 1 FEBRUARY. USCG ACADEMY INFORMATION MISSION… AIM… WILL BE ACCEPTED STARTING LATE FEBRUARY.

AND YOU CAN APPLY ONLINE!

On February 1, 2010 the United States Naval Academy will open its' online application for current high school juniors (going into senior year fall 2010) to apply for the Naval Academy Summer Seminar (NASS) Program. If not familiar with the NASS Program, it is a six day immersion program that runs throughout June in three sessions:

Session 1 6/5-6/10
Session 2 6/12-6/17
Session 3 6/19-6/24

If you're thinking about the Naval Academy, this is a great opportunity to visit and participate in academy activities and find out if it's really what you want…and hopefully become a midshipman at USNA. Deadline for application submission is 31 March 2010.

Interested cadets can find the online application for NASS at
http://www.usna.edu/admissions/nass.htm

AND….Just like last year, NHQ will reimburse the 2010 tuition fee (this year is $350) to each Sea Cadet who is accepted to and successfully completes NASS. Unit CO's are to issue local orders for cadets attending, NSCTNG 003. Travel should be into and out of BWI Airport, Baltimore, where the Academy runs a pick up and drop off shuttle. After NASS, submit to NHQ a copy of the local orders and a receipt for the tuition expense and NHQ will reimburse each cadet via his or her unit. We have done this since 2005 with about 40-50 cadets taking advantage and we will do it again 2010.

Additionally, this guidance will be promulgated in the NSCC Summer Training Schedule to be promulgated at the end of February, just like last year.

A complete power point briefing on NASS has been posted to COMPASS under advanced training, remember, NASS and AIM attendance does count as advanced training. You can go there, as well as to the website, for more detailed information.

When you apply, BE SURE AND CHECK THE SEA CADET BOX ON THE APPLICATION !

US COAST GUARD ACADEMY SUMMER SEMINAR….AIM …. WHICH STANDS FOR ACADEMY INFORMATION MISSION….SUMMER 2010 APPLICATIONS WILL BE POSTED IN LATE FEBRUARY WITH AN APPLICATION DEADLINE OF 1 APRIL 2010.

In late February, the United States Coast Guard Academy will post its' application for current juniors (entering senior year this fall 2010) to apply for the US Coast Guard Academy Summer Seminar (AIM) Program. Session 1 7/4-7/10
Session 2 7/11-7/17
Session 3 7/18-7/24

Interested cadets can find information on AIM and the online application for AIM at
http://admissions.uscga.edu/i2e/AIMapp/index.asp and additional information at http://admissions.uscga.edu/i2e/summer/. Deadline for application submission is 1 April 2010.

Just like last year, and just like NASS, NSCC NHQ will reimburse the 2010 tuition fee of $350 to each Sea Cadet who is accepted to and successfully completes AIM. Unit CO's are to issue local orders for cadets attending, NSCTNG 003. Attention 8th & 9th, plus some 10th and 11th Grade apply for the Naval Academy STEM program

STEM Website

Naval Academy STEM Program Printable PDF

Below is an email from Chuck Bortell, Adam’s Blue and Gold Officer, about the expanded Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Summer Program that is offered at the Naval Academy. There is no charge for the program!  It is on a scholarship basis! As you may know, 4 of our Cadets attended this program last summer and really enjoyed it.  Please review the information below to see if this is something you might be interested in.  As we learned last year, those who get their applications in early get preference.  The actual application will not be available until early February, and we will make sure to send it to you.

Please note that the program is now open to rising 10th and 11th graders, in addition to rising 8th and 9th graders.

Best regards,

 Lynn

There is NO obligation to this!  However, it's a chance for superior young students to work directly with "actual, front-line college professors"; in a environment emphasizing immediate application of theoretical concepts into exercises/experiments/design projects in Math, Science, & Engineering.  These projects are "hands-on"; working in superlative "labs" with design and testing equipment, which are nonpareil; plus, the renowned faculty, of course.

Maybe, you know some young (primarily, 8th & 9th, plus some 10th and 11th Grade) superior students, who might want to consider such an opportunity?

Participants stay in Bancroft Hall and dine in King Hall; just like midshipmen, who will lead them. (Hint: This is a Leadership training exercise for midshipmen, as well.) Naturally, the supervising midshipmen, are also directly managed by commissioned officers and the academic staff. Other than souvenirs and "gee-dunk" snacks, the cost is just the transportation for those lucky enough to be selected.

From looking at the superb features of the program, my hypothesis: selection standards are probably quite high from the perspective of technical academic prowess.

The STEM program Application will be available online in early February. Session I: 07-12 JUN for Rising 8th-9th Graders. Session II: 14-19 JUN for Rising 10th Graders. Session III: 21-26 JUN for Rising 11th Graders.

Eligibility: The Naval Academy Summer STEM Program is offered to rising 8th-11th Graders. Students must demonstrate superior academic performance to include GPA, class standing, and/or strong PSAT, SAT or ACT results. An achievement in athletics and extracurricular activities, in good health, have a positive attitude and good moral character are among additional selection criteria.

Tuition & Expenses: All students selected to participate will receive a full scholarship to attend the camp, which includes your room and board, meals, as well as a variety of materials. Plan on bringing extra cash for snacks and souvenirs.

Each student is responsible for arranging transportation to and from the Naval Academy. Those flying commercial air should make arrangements to arrive at Baltimore-Washington International airport (BWI) between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Day 1 of the program, and depart after 2:00 p.! m. on th e last day of the program. Buses and midshipmen escorts will be on hand to get you to and from the Academy and BWI.

2010 Summer STEM Program Sessions:
Grade Level                   Dates
8th & 9th                      June 7-12
                                 June 14-19
                                  June 21-26
